Turin's Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art opens an exhibition of Maria Morganti's work
TURIN.- GAM is presenting the first major anthological exhibition of Maria Morganti's work with a wide selection of works created between 1988 and 2024. The exhibition traces an itinerary through the work of Maria Morganti whose work finds its origin in the essentiality of the pictorial gesture, in its repetition and expansion over time. Hers is an undertaking that has developed steadily over the years, to the point of outlining an architecture of thought, a space of work and storage, a physical and mental place – the artist’s studio – where time is given shape through the simplicity of daily acts that, by slow stratification and accumulation, compose the complex chromatic diary of an existence. The heart of Morganti's studio moves to the centre of the GAM exhibition space. Called Gestureplace, it is a work in itself, and comprises the Sedimentary – a structure that contains all the paintings ... More

Group exhibition features the work of four artists who draw their inspiration from nature
AMSTERDAM.- BorzoGallery presents 'The Nature of Nature', a group exhibition featuring the work of four artists who draw their inspiration from nature. The presentation consists of new work by Charles Popelier (*1955), alongside paintings by Paul Butti (1924-2004), matter paintings by Jaap Wagemaker (1906-1972) and photography by Jan Commandeur (1954-2024). In Paris, after 1945, a free art emerges-a lyrical abstraction that explicitly breaks with pre-war realism. In the 1950s, from this free and often colorful abstraction, a sub-movement known as 'informal art' arises, or by its technical classification, 'matter painting,' represented by artists such as Alberto Burri, Antoni Tapiès, Emil Schumacher, Bram Bogart, and Jean Dubuffet. More or less recognizable figurative forms and elements disappear from the painting, and the material ... More

DALLAS, TX.- Star Wars collectors, this is the auction you’ve been looking for. As it turns out, that historic event served as a prequel to Heritage’s December 4 Action Figures & Toys Platinum Star Wars Signature® Auction, which counts among its legendary offerings an even scarcer and more coveted hand-painted version of the rocket-firing Boba Fett that was famously among rocker Rick Springfield’s collection of Star Wars action figures. But the hand-painted bounty hunter is far from the sole treasure in this auction. Indeed, collectors will discover in this event some long-lost, seldom-seen keepsakes from a galaxy far, far away: the original ... More

BERLIN.- The Kupferstichkabinett at Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie invites visitors to explore the intriguing world of sleep and dreams in art with the exhibition "Are You Dreaming? Closed Eyes in Art," open until January 9, 2025. This unique presentation uncovers the subtle allure and complex symbolism behind sleeping figures, a recurring yet unexpected motif that provides artists with a canvas for mystery, sensuality, and imagination. In visual art, sleep is not merely a physical state but also a gateway to the subconscious and the fantastic. Artists have long depicted sleeping figures to convey a state of vulnerability that heightens suspense for the viewer. Curator Mailena Mallach, an expert in early German drawings and prints at the Kupferstichkabinett, explains that sleep in art is “a field of exploration for artists, allowing them to delve into the less conventional ... Flashback
On a day like today, Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer was born
October 31, 1632. Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer (October 1632 - December 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings. In this image: Participants of a press conference look at a painting, entitled Holding a Balance, by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany, 16 March 2011.
