New Works by California Artists: Mitchell Johnson

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA.- The Triton Museum of Art presents "New Works by California Artists: Mitchell Johnson,"  on view through March 9, 2003. This figurative and landscape painter is above all, a colorist who has been influenced by Matisse, Derian, Corot, Joan Mitchell and Richard Diebenkorn.  He paints both directly on site and by memory in the studio.  His oil on linen paintings are sensitive celebrations of nature, color, place and time as well as the people he’s discovered within the chosen landscape.

Born l964 in South Carolina, Johnson was educated at Randolf-Macon College in Virginia, Washington Studio School in DC and took his MFA from Parson School of Design in New York. He has studied and worked with Larry Rivers, Sam Francis and Wolf Kahn. His motifs are the landscape and the beach, but painting is his subject and the results are exquisite and thoughtful.
