The 10 Best Art Schools in the World

Art schools are a little bit different to regular schools because we can judge their merits based not on exam results but on the quality of the talent that we see coming out of them. Creativity is subjective, and in this case that’s a good thing. It means that we can each pick out the best school for us based on how much we like the work that their alumni are creating.

Still, certain art schools have better reputations than others, and so it’s worth spending a little time getting to know which ones typically end up at the top of the lists. And so with that in mind, we’ve done the research for you and got to know which art schools are the highest rated, not just in the United States but across the globe. Let’s get started.

The 10 Best Art Schools in the World

1. Rhode Island School of Design

RISD has constantly ranked towards the top of the list when it comes to art and design, and it even has its own museum with over 80,000 works of art. One of the best ways to teach modern art is to occasionally leave the classroom, and with 80,000 artworks just a stone’s throw away from the lecture hall, there’s plenty of engaging learning opportunities on offer to students.

2. University of the Arts London
UAL recently beat RSID in a list of the top arts universities in the world and currently has the number two spot for visual creatives. On top of that, its location in the British capital means that there are dozens of galleries nearby and a thriving local artistic scene to tap into.

3. The Royal College of Art
If UAL isn’t your thing but you still want to study in London, there’s also the Royal College of Art, a prestigious educational institute that’s the only entirely postgraduate art and design university in the world. That means that if you want to study there, you’ll first need to study an undergraduate degree at one of the other educational institutes on this list.

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT is one of the most iconic colleges in the world, and with good reason. It’s earned its entry on this list through its technological design courses and the research that it carries out, as well as the impressive work that we see from their post-grads.

5. University of California, Los Angeles
UCLA is one of the bigger art institutions in the world with over 30,000 undergraduates, but more places can mean less competition and so it can be easier to get into than some of the other schools on this list. And while they’re not a dedicated arts school, they do have some pretty good courses on offer.

6. Ontario College of Art and Design
This Canadian college was established in 2010 and offers a number of different bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts and design subjects. Their campus includes the Sharp Centre for Design, and all students are given free membership to the city’s art gallery.

7. Design Academy, Eindhoven
Based in the Netherlands, the Design Academy has been building an impressive global brand ever since its establishment in the 1950s. It specializes in fashion design, graphic design, art and architecture and every student who graduates goes away with a bachelor of design degree.

8. École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts
Competition is tough here, so if you want to get into this Parisian school then you might want to consider shopping around for a research paper service of great quality to help to boost your portfolio. As one of the most famous arts schools in the world, it’s attracted and produced only the very best for over 350 years.

9. Tsinghua University
Based in the Chinese capital of Beijing, Tsinghua University is ranked as the best university in the country, and while it doesn’t specialize exclusively in art and design, it does have a comprehensive liberal arts program including an arts school called Xinya College within the university.

10. The University of New South Wales
Consistently ranked as one of the top Australian universities, the University of New South Wales has its own Faculty of Arts and Design. They have a wide range of courses on offer and excellent links to the wider arts scene both in New South Wales and in Australia as a whole.

Conclusion
Now that you know which options are out there when it comes to art school, the next step is for you to shortlist your favorites and to start applying. Remember that the best art schools for one person aren’t necessarily the best for another, so don’t be afraid to shop around different art schools until you find one that you like the look of.

The good news is that as prestigious as the top art schools are, they still need students to survive. Sure, there might be a lot of competition for their spots, but that just means that only the most talented students are able to get places. This helps to create a self-fulfilling prophecy and is the reason why these institutions are on this list in the first place. Good luck with your applications!
