Nursery Rhyme Activities for preschool

Toddlers and preschoolers love nursery rhymes and will really have a deep connection when getting stuck into these sensory play activities and ideas to accompany their rhymes. As a matter of fact, nursery rhymes are important part of literacy teaching for preschoolers. They naturally help toddlers and preschoolers develop phonemic awareness skills. This is the most influential development stage for children before they start to read.

Although there are several tactics of infusing phonemic awareness skills into children, reciting rhymes and infusing them into your classroom with other activities and centers makes the difference.

Jack-Be-Nimble Nursery rhyme activities
Here is another very involving activity that you can involve your students while singing Jack-Be-Nimble. The best way to do this is to recite the rhyme and substitute each child’s name. Each child should take turn as you substitute their names to jump over objects. To make it perfect and more involving, you can vary the height and the width of the objects you set for them to jump. They will go up as they gain experience and skills as you sing along.

The best among all practices is to lay a candle on the floor and sing the rhyme and substitute the name and at the same time vary the nimbler of times someone should jump. It’s this easy:

‘’Jack’’ be nimble
‘’jack’’ be quick
‘’Jack’’ jump, jump, jump (jump three times over the candle stick)

As you sing and the student jump, the other children should be clapping and counting the number of times they jump.

Circle time Nursery Rhymes activities
Here, we are going to talk about some of the activities that you can introduce to your students. These ones are particularly helpful during circle time or any time during the session. To start on this, follow the below steps.

• You and the students should be able to say the rhymes together. This is the first thing you should do.

• The next thing is to shout it loudly or whisper it quietly.

• Now you need to change the words from pinky wincy spider to Big enormous spider. You should say the poem again slowly to make sure that you are on the same page.

• Now give your students an insight about different types of spiders. You should as well tell them who likes the spiders and who doesn’t and why.

• Now get a spider book such as The very Busy spider and give the students a time to predict what you are going to say next.

• Later, infuse the spider web game while experimenting with cotton wool balls. You can say to them that they are holding the cloud in their hands, ask them what they feels to get answers as to whether its light or light, soft or scratchy. After that, soak it into water like rain and repeat the same questions again.

• Eventually squeeze it gently and ask what is happening.

Little Jack Horner
This is one of the best activities that you can get your preschoolers stuck into while you are waiting for the bus or when you are out of topic for some time. To act this, you have to start by stuffing a ‘’pot pie’’ pan and cover with felt and sticking a small ball.

Circle time-sheep songs
It’s time to gauge the songs you know about sheep and practice that with your students. You can either sing Baa Baa Black sheep or Mary had a little lamb. There are several other songs you can sing here but you have to make sure you have the lyrics and you are well versed with them. You can check mary had a little lamb lyrics and practice perfectly.

Jack Jill went up the hill activities
You know the rhyme and now you want to see whether your students can make the rhyme. As you sing along, I think they can do better.

The next activity is to ask the kids to draw the sequence in a little zigzag book. Some kids can be able to write a line of text to go under each of the pictures.

Think of several other names with letter ‘’J’’ and substitute with them to see if there are any changes they can make. You can now ask the kids questions about the Rhyme. The main reason for this is to make sure they are versed with what they are singing. As a matter of fact, it’s very simple to assume they get what you are saying but they are just enjoying the sounds.

The other wise idea is to use two children to ‘’Hot seat’’ acting as Jack and Jill and other kids to ask them the questions.

Humpty Dumpty Nursery rhyme activities for preschool
It’s your turn now to read the rhyme and invite children to join you reread the nursery rhyme. To make it more involving, you can ask some questions such as where did Humpty Dumpty sit? What happened when he fell? Where did the egg sit? Was the wall a good place for the egg to sit there? Now that Humpty dumpty fell, who tried to help him?

To make them more involving and easy to understand what is happening, you can print and laminate the Humpty Dumpty puzzle. In this case, you should leave it for each kid to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

With the rhyming words, you can write words from a set of rhyming words on small self adhesive labels. The next thing is to stick one label to the egg carton cups.

The above are some of the Nursery rhyme activities for preschool that you can take. There are several other activities to make your students active but the above are the most common. As a matter of fact, children want to have a sense of play and having fun. This way, they will easily understand what they are being taught. As their teacher and the guardian, its upon you to make sure you have the best and the most involving activities.
