SANTA MONICA, CA.- Euphoria: Paintings by Miriam Wosk will be on view in Project Room 1 at the Santa Monica Museum of Art from September 9 through November 25, 2006. The exhibition, Wosk’s first solo museum show, will consist of three large-scale paintings including Time, Space, Cosmology, and Life, pictured above. A new documentary film about Wosk’s studio process entitled “Language of the Soul: The Work of Miriam Wosk”, produced and directed by Academy Award©-winning filmmaker Terry Sanders, will be shown on a video monitor as part of the exhibition.

The multi-layered, encrusted surfaces of the paintings in Euphoria are populated with layers of extraterrestrial flowers, otherworldly vegetation, and cosmological crystalline abstractions. The three works radiate intense exuberance, transfixing the viewer with glorious profusions of pearls, glitter, crystals, starfish, paint, collaged paper, and other materials at play within the frame. Wosk explores her fantastical, primordial universe born of pouring, painting, airbrushing, gluing, embedding, and coating in a devotional, obsessive-like repetition. Combining pictorial elegance with audacious excess, the artist beckons her audience to release themselves into a seductive maelstrom where iridescent apparitions glow from within and erupt from the picture plane.

Wosk attended the University of British Columbia, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the School of Visual Arts, and The New School of Social Research in New York. She lives in Santa Monica and shows with Billy Shire Fine Arts in Los Angeles. Wosk’s current body of work is chronicled in Sequins and Skeletons: The Art of Miriam Wosk, a recently published, seventy-four page, full color, hardback book with an essay by Peter Clothier (La Luz de Jesus Press, and Last Gasp 2006).
