The Dolphin is an Art Program in Can Cun
Sculptures like the one in this photo will be placed in public spaces in Cancun.

CANCUN, MEXICO.- Just like international metropolis such as Vancouver, Bogotá, Washington and Mexico City, Cancun has joined the world trend of filling public spaces with art that creates a connection with the people who live there. Cows, whales, bears, trees and butterflies are only some of the motifs used to beautify these cities and give them a touch of warmth… and humanity, since these programs are always linked to a good cause.

As part of their cultural philosophy toward society and because of its commitment to sustainable recreation and tourism through its Delphinus trademark, Grupo Via Delphi is participating as the official program sponsor.

Kukulcan Plaza and SEDTUR are heading the beautiful "THE DOLPHIN IS ART" program for Cancun, which, like its name says, uses a dolphin as its main motif.

Dolphins are not only charismatic, but also represent the values of our state and its people. The main pillar of the program is the call to local, regional, national and even international artists to join us and use their talent and artistic genius to contribute to projecting Cancun as a happy place filled with positive, hard-working people; to make Cancun once again the center of national and international attention. The other pillar of the program, besides beautifying the city for its inhabitants and in general for all the state of Quintana Roo, is to add another attraction that all our visitors can enjoy. This reflects the state government's commitment to the community, through the Department of Tourism.

Added to all of this is the good cause that the program will be helping. We'll collect funds for the World Wildlife Fund, an organization that works with the living planet, whose mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth's natural environment and to build a future in which all human beings can live in harmony with nature. Since the WWF also works with the preservation of high priority species, the funds we collect will be used to help a program focused on preserving the whale shark, the world's largest fish. Whale sharks arrive by the hundreds each year, attracted by the abundance of plankton found off northern Quintana Roo's coast.

In general terms, the program has contemplated 80-100 dolphins. They will first be placed at strategic points along public streets in Cancun and then go on tour throughout the state. These works of art can also be used to represent the city in national parades or even be used as ambassadors at international fairs, thanks to the sponsorship of the Cancun Visitor's and Conventions Bureau (OVC). Kukulcan Plaza will be in charge of coordinating the project, with the support of SEDETUR and Delphinus as the special sponsor.
