SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.- Art Gallery of New South Wales presents Brendan Lee...Two Birds With One Stone, on view through December 6, 2006. Melbourne artist Brendan Lee works in the medium of video installation. In
two birds with one stone he re-creates the prison meeting room where a barrier separates inmate and visitor. Filmed in a menacing blue hue, two prison inmates named Scum nuts and Pig killer speak in aggressive tones. Created in the Australian prison genre, Lee takes his inspiration from movies such as Prisoner, Scum, Stir, Ghost
of the Civil Dead and Chopper. He considers the language of film, why we are no longer shocked by violence and how easily we can be seduced by imagery.
Brendan Lee is a founding member of THE KINGS Artist Run Collective, Melbourne and the PROJEKT Australian Video Art archives. Lee has recently had solo exhibitions at The Perth Institute for Contemporary Art, The Institute for Modern Art, Brisbane and The Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne. His works have been included in a range of internationally curated exhibitions and festivals in Los Angeles, Spain, Berlin, Amsterdam, London and Athens. He has also curated a number of exhibitions and screenings nationally and internationally. He was the guest editor of Photofile 74: Flick the Switch and recently completed an Australia Council residency in Los Angeles. Lee lectures in video art at Victoria University.
