EINDHOVEN.- In the exhibition Homecoming, on show from 28 June 2025 to 7 December 2025 in the Van Abbemuseum's project room, online platform Alien Mag invites artists to show what home means to them. They show that this is not just a place, but can also be a person or memory. They call on visitors to think about the question: What does home mean to you?
Alien Mag seeks to explore the journey of selfdiscovery and the moment of finding your inner home. They invited Brabantbased artists Hemaseh Manawi Rad, Rita Pieternella, Larissa Schepers, Miranda Gashi and Irem Pınarbaşı to represent this quest from various art disciplines. In their work, they do not shy away from difficult conversations and emotions.
The artists and the works
Together with her mother, Larissa Schepers embroiders objects from glass beads. In this intimate collaboration, they arrive at shared heritage. In her work Modder Nature, Irem Pınarbaşı explores the fertility of earth and body. She draws inspiration from Turkish culture and religious stories. Rita Pieternella's Caribbean carnival costumes exude strength, pride and the beauty of women and pay homage to origins and identity. Hemaseh Manawi Rad shows a fountain based on the traditional Iranian howz, symbolising daily renewal and the constant flow of life. In the analogue photo series Fruits of Labour, Miranda Gashi takes us through a tribute to her grandfather and makes us reflect on the visibility of migration and sacrifice.
Alien Mag
Since 2018, Alien Mag has been committed to increasing the visibility of women with diverse backgrounds in media and art. Through their online magazine, public programmes and educational tracks, they create space for encounter, reflection and growth. In the world of Alien Mag, emerging and established artists meet, both self taught and academically trained. The exhibition Homecoming has been curated by guest curators Imane El Oualkadi, Naima El Azzouzi and Aminanta Minte, the founders of Alien Mag.
Homecoming is part of a series of constituent exhibitions the Van Abbemuseum is creating with communities from Eindhoven and the surrounding area.
