Christie's Sale of Decorative Arts Europe Including Oriental Carpets Achieves $7,612,875

NEW YORK, NY.- The 500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe including Oriental Carpets sale realized $7,612,875/£4,670,475/€5,286,719 and was sold 70% by lot and 85% by value. The top lot of the sale was a George III Ormolu-Mounted Pollard Oak, Indian rosewood, amaranth and marquetry commode, by Chippendale, Haig & Co., circa 1775, realizing $578,500/£354,908/€401,736.

Anne Igelbrink, Specialist of European Furniture & Works of Art and Casey Rogers, Specialist of 19th Century Furniture & Decorative Art said: “The sale couldn’t have had a better start than Part I of the Robert Pearson Cane Collection. Fierce bidding from around the world sent prices skyrocketing to achieve multiples of their estimates and in particular for the jeweled animals and signed examples. We were also delighted that all categories saw a strong response from an array international of buyers, who reacted with spirited bidding on all fronts. The outstanding price achieved for The Maridon Museum’s exquisite ivory panel ($254,500) was a clear indication of the vibrancy of the European ivory market. Masterworks of the 19th century led an important group of furnishings and ceramics from an Ohio Estate, including $194,500 for Louis Solon’s Mintons pâte-sur-pâte vases and $116,500 for an 18th century-inspired commode by the pre-eminent ébéniste, François Linke. The romance of Napoleon and Josephine continued to excite bidders as sixteen plates with Josephine’s crest achieved $197,000. English furniture continued to reign triumphant and comprised half of the top ten lots with the George III commode by Chippendale achieving the top price of the sale at $578,500. We eagerly anticipate our 7 June 500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe auction, which will include Part II of the Robert Pearson Cane Collection.”

A Trumbauer Estate on the Philadelphia Main Line sale realized $1,803,875/£1,106,672/€1,252,691 and was sold 75% by lot and 83% by value. The top lot of the sale was an Italian Giltwood Side Table, circa 1775, realizing $116,500/£71,472/€80,903.

William Strafford, Head of European Furniture, said: “A rich array of treasures from A Trumbauer Estate on the Philadelphia Main Line were keenly sought after by a wide range of buyers from all over the world. Precious objects were particularly in demand, for instance the superb Louis XVI ormolu-mounted jasper bowl, which sold well above its high estimate. We look forward to the next collection sale on June 6- A Park Avenue Interior by Mark Hampton.”
