BERLIN.- Hidari Zingaro Berlin presents Spectra Vision, an exhibition curated by German artist Anselm Reyle.

Founded by Takashi Murakami as a sister gallery to ‘Hidari Zingaro’ in Tokyo, Hidari Zingaro Berlin has contributed to Berlin’s art scene with a series of exhibitions introducing the state of art and subculture in contemporary Japan. Now, the gallery seeks to expand its mission by working with young artists local to Berlin and Germany, while still exploring Murakami’s long-term interest in cross-cultural aesthetics and emerging media. To mark its first official foray into the German scene, the gallery has the honor of working with German artist Anselm Reyle, who has curated an exhibition of young artists that draws partly from students of his curriculum at the Art Academy in Hamburg.

Known worldwide for his large-scale abstract paintings, objects and sculptures, Reyle has been a professor of painting since 2006. Similar to the use and codification of varied materials in his own work, Reyle draws his students’ attention to fundamental questions about the media in which they work and encourages the incorporation of new materials and technology.

In keeping with this spirit, Reyle has not selected a specific thematic element for the show but has instead chosen artists whose work challenged his own assumptions and which he finds somewhat irritating in the sense that he has never encountered works of this form, intensity and consequence. Each of the pieces contains an obvious directness or immediacy, both in conceptual and formal style.

The different perspectives of the chosen artists, 3 of them students of his class, reveal a wide spectrum of attitudes toward nature and technology. The media chosen by the artists ranges from installation to abstract painting and performance. Primitive objects are exhibited in contrast to digitally edited items and patterns. This distance between canonical media and those still on the fringe of acceptance (such as web-design) creates a tension that challenges the spectator.

During the exhibition’s run, visitors will also have the chance to experience a series of performance works which will take place in the gallery.

The exhibition will run in Berlin until June before later travelling to Tokyo.
