AMSTERDAM.- Beatrice von Bormann is the new curator of art 1860-1960 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The Dutch art historian served as Head of Collections and curator at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg since 2014, curating shows such as Charlotte Salomon – Leben? oder Theater? and Affichomanie. Toulouse-Lautrec und das Plakat um 1900. Previously, in the role of freelance curator, von Bormann curated exhibitions including Oskar Kokoschka – Humanist und Rebell for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which travelled to Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Dix/Beckmann: Mythos Welt for the Städtische Kunsthalle Mannheim, and the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich. She also mounted the exhibition Max Beckmann in Amsterdam, 1937-1947 for the Van Gogh Museum. Von Bormann was guest researcher at the University of Amsterdam from 2002-2010.

At the Stedelijk, Beatrice von Bormann succeeds Geurt Imanse as curator of art from 1860 to 1960. In her new role, she will concentrate on carrying out research into the museum holdings, mounting exhibitions of work from the collection, and temporary exhibitions featuring works on loan. Von Bormann: ''The Stedelijk Museum is one of the most important museums in the field of modern art, my area of expertise, and I am delighted to have the privilege of working with the Stedelijk’s fantastic collection. The Stedelijk possesses an astonishing wealth of knowledge and expertise. This is also a moment of change, with plans for presentations that highlight fresh, innovative insights, produced in conjunction with research institutes. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this.”

Bart van der Heide, Head of Curators and Research: “With Beatrice’s vision, the Stedelijk Museum continues its ambition of broadening and enriching the historic avant-garde with new narratives. Her addition to our team also means greater emphasis on the work of women artists, and art historical developments originating beyond Western Europe.”

Beatrice von Bormann is preparing a number of projects for 2021, including an exhibition exploring the work of German Expressionists Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and their specific relationship with ethnographic art, considered from a post-colonial perspective. The presentation is a co-production with the Statens Museum in Copenhagen.
