NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s announced the two-day sale of Prints & Multiples taking place over three sessions from October 24-25. This sale includes over 300 lots by major artists of the 20th to 21st centuries including contemporary editions by Louise Bourgeois, Keith Haring, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol—and modern works by Marc Chagall, Edward Hopper, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso—among others. The auction features property from several private collections including The Collection of Marc Bell, The Collection of Melva Bucksbaum, and The Collection of Senator Jacob K. Javits, and Marian B. Javits.

Beginning the first ten lots of the sale is complete set of Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup II screenprints, 1969 (sold individually) from The Estate of Dr. Giuseppe Rossi. Dr. Rossi was the chest and vascular surgeon credited to saving the artist’s life on June 3, 1968, after he was shot by radical feminist and playwright Valerie Solanas. The incident had a profound effect on Warhol and this group of screenprints was given to the doctor as a gesture of the artist’s immense gratitude.

Also featured in the Contemporary session of the sale is The Collection of Melva Bucksbaum, known as one of the art world’s most beloved figures and founder of the Bucksbaum Award, the celebrated honor presented during the Whitney Biennial. The Collection is led by an impressive selection of editions by Louise Bourgeois, including Ode à l’Oubli, the complete hand-made cloth book with 35 compositions, 2002 (estimate: $150,000-250,000); and works by Jasper Johns, Agnes Martin, Ed Ruscha, and William Kentridge, among others.

Additional Post War & Contemporary highlights include a complete set of Warhol’s Flowers, ten screenprints in colors, 1970 (estimate: $600,000-800,000), from The Collection of Marc Bell, Boca Raton, Florida; Roy Lichtenstein, Nude with Blue Hair, State I, from Nudes, 1994 (estimate: $300,000-500,000); and a selection of prints from The Tuttleman Collection, featuring Lichtenstein’s View from the Window, from Landscape Series, 1985 (estimate: $70,000-100,000).

The sale also features Property from a Distinguished American Collection, spanning etchings from major American modernists, including works by Edward Hopper, Martin Lewis, George Wesley Bellows, and Reginald Marsh; and a selection of modern illustrated books including works from The Werner Bokelberg Collection, featuring examples by Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti, among others.

Leading the modern section is Pablo Picasso, Nature morte au verre sous la lampe, 1962 (estimate: $200,000-300,000). Other modern highlights include an offering of lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec; an important print by James McNeill Whistler, The Dyer, etching with drypoint, 1879/80 (estimate: $80,000-120,000); and a selection of color etchings by Mary Cassatt.

Complementing the live auction is a dedicated online sale Screen Star: Alexander Heinrici, Master Printer, taking place from October 17-26, featuring an array of editions from the printer’s studio archive.

Alexander Heinrici has enjoyed a distinguished career as a mater printer for the last five decades, from his initial days in New York creating hundreds of portraits with Andy Warhol in the 1970s to his present-day work with Donald Sultan, Donald Baechler, and many others. This extensive body of work has placed him at the forefront of contemporary printmaking, where he has become well known for his ability to successfully merge the best of the artist’s vision and technique with a modern approach that is unique to each artist’s ideas.
