Neue Galerie to reopen Café Sabarsky, Book Store, and Design Shop October 1

NEW YORK, NY.—
Neue Galerie New York announced today plans to reopen it's doors on October 1, 2026 following a successful Summer 2026 restoration project on the museum's historic building. Café Sabarsky, the Book Store, and Design Shop, all located on the first floor of the museum's Gilded Age mansion building, will resume regular hours of operation on Thursday, October 1:

The museum's galleries, which are located on the second and third floors of the building, will reopen to the public with the “25th Anniversary Exhibition,” which debuts on Thursday, November 12, 2026.
Café Sabarsky, under the direction of Executive Chef Christopher Engel, draws its inspiration from the great Viennese cafés that served as important centers of intellectual and artistic life at the turn of the century. The café bears the name of Neue Galerie New York co-founder Serge Sabarsky, and is outfitted with period objects, including lighting fixtures by Josef Hoffmann, furniture by Adolf Loos, and banquettes that are upholstered with a 1912 Otto Wagner fabric. A Bösendorfer grand piano graces one corner of the Café, and is used for all Cabaret at Café Sabarsky, chamber, and classical music performances at the museum.
The Book Store and Design Shop, located on the main floor of the museum, offer a one-of-a-kind retail experience. The Design Shop presents superb objects based on original designs from Biedermeier, Vienna 1900 and the Bauhaus. In addition, the Neue Galerie collaborates with renowned contemporary designers to create original pieces inspired by the museum’s collection. The Book Store specializes in publications on fine art, architecture and decorative arts from Austria, Germany and related Central European cultures, along with prints, postcards and stationery related to the museum’s collection. While the museum's building has been closed this summer for restoration, the Book Store and Design Shop have continued to operate and fulfill online orders 24/7 at neuegalerie.org/shop.
The museum's galleries, which are located on the second and third floors, will reopen to the public on November 12, 2026 with the “25th Anniversary Exhibition.” The celebratory exhibition will underscore the museum’s unique mission: to bring a sense of perspective back to Germanic culture of the early 20th century, and to make the best of this work available to American and other audiences for both scholarly and aesthetic inquiry. This special presentation will fill the entirety of the Neue Galerie's landmark Museum Mile building, featuring collection highlights – such as Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907).
“As we mark this quarter-century milestone, our focus has remained on the future of the Neue Galerie,” said Renée Price, director of the museum. “The longevity of our historic home, 1048 Fifth Avenue, depends on careful, loving, ongoing upkeep. We are so pleased to have successfully completed important steps in a multi-phased process to enhance the building and fortify it for the next chapter. We very much look forward to welcoming guests back into the Neue Galerie in October.” The building was completed in 1914 by Carrère & Hastings (architects of the New York Public Library) and is designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Commission.
In May 2026, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Neue Galerie New York announced plans for a landmark agreement to merge in 2028. Timed with the Neue Galerie’s 25th anniversary, the agreement marks a transformative step in preserving and advancing this extraordinary cultural legacy for future generations. For now until the merger is complete in 2028, the Neue Galerie will continue to operate independently.
