17th-18th C. Chinese Sandstone Seated Lohan - Anjali Mudra. East Asia, China, Ming-Qing Dynasty, ca. 1600–1799 CE. A serene arhat carved from warm reddish sandstone sits in quiet devotion, both feet planted on the ground and palms pressed together at the chest in the anjali mudra, gesture of greeting and gratitude. The bald, smooth-domed head, softly furrowed brow, and gently smiling mouth convey the composed inner life of an enlightened disciple. Estimate: $6,000 - $9,000.

A masterfully carved Maori Revival wood feather or treasure box known as a wakahuia. A congregation of sixteen cast brass Buddhas ascends a stepped wooden platform, each figure seated in meditative repose upon its own pedestal block. The diminutive icons sit cross-legged with hands resting in the lap, robes falling in soft folds across the shoulder, crowned by the ushnisha that marks an awakened mind. Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800.
