Bust of Argentine Independence Hero Unveiled in Vienna

VIENNA.(EFE)- A bust of Latin American liberator Jose de San Martin was unveiled Tuesday next to the U.N. headquarters in Vienna by Argentine Ambassador Eugenio Maria Curia.

The sculpture is in the so-called "Latin American corner" of Danube Park, where busts of other independence leaders and politicians from the region, such as Simon Bolivar, Jose Marti, Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Salvador Allende have already been placed.

About 100 people, including numerous ambassadors and Austrian politicians, attended the ceremony.

Curia discussed San Martin's accomplishments, which included the liberation of Argentina, Chile and Peru from Spanish colonialism.

The bust was donated by the Argentine ambassador and sits on a stone pedestal.

It has an inscription that reads: "General Don Jose de San Martin, Libertador de la Argentina, Chile y Peru. La conciencia es el mejor juez que tiene un hombre de bien" ("General Don Jose de San Martin, Liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru. Conscience is the best judge a man has of good").

After the playing of his country's national anthem and addresses by Austro-Argentine Society officials, Curia unveiled the bust, which had been covered with an Argentine flag and blue and white balloons. EFE
