STOWE, VT.- The Current, a center for contemporary art with a mission to inspire civic engagement and broaden our understanding of the world through contemporary art, and
YoungArts, a national organization that champions artists throughout their lifetimes and across all art forms, announce the launch of a new collaborative artist residency program in Vermont, supporting a YoungArts artist with a two-week residency. Interdisciplinary artist Timothy Hyunsoo Lee is currently in residence at The Current, marking the program's inaugural edition.
The program marks a new partnership for YoungArts in Vermont, expanding its nationwide network of cultural partners that provide artists with opportunities to develop their practices and sustain their careers. Designed to give artists the time, space, and financial support needed to deepen their creative practice, the residency also creates opportunities for connection and artistic exchange within the local community.
YoungArts will provide the artist with a $5,000 stipend, transportation, lodging, and a materials fee, along with a separate honorarium should the artist choose to lead an optional workshop with local schools. The Current will provide a 24-by-28-foot studio space within its galleries, with access to all the organization's facilities, including a clay studio, a flat glass studio, and printmaking press.
"Everything YoungArts does is in service of artists, and the strongest partnerships begin with asking what an artist needs to move their work forward," says Clive Chang, President and CEO of YoungArts. "The Current brings a real openness to that question, with facilities that invite experimentation and a commitment to meeting artists where their work takes them. We're excited to see what Timothy explores here and to build on this collaboration for future residents."
"At this moment, it is more important than ever to support the voices of artists working today, and we are grateful for the support and collaboration of YoungArts to further our shared mission of commitment to artists working with important topics today," says Rachel Moore, Executive Director and Director of Exhibitions, The Current.
Timothy Hyunsoo Lee is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores the relationship between bodies, borders, and rituals. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in New York City, Lee received his B.A. in Neuroscience, Biology, and Studio Art from Wesleyan University and his MFA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. Working across representation and abstraction, his work draws on multicultural perspectives, the lasting effects of childhood trauma, and both analog and technological processes, referencing fortresses, imagined landscapes, and fleshy bodies to explore immigration, othering, and belonging as a queer, undocumented immigrant.
Lee has exhibited widely, including at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Studio Museum, the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University, La Casa Encendida, and the YoungArts Foundation Gallery, along with a public project with MTA Arts & Design in New York. His work is held in private and public collections worldwide, including Facebook, MTA Arts & Design, the Luciano Benetton Foundation, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Basu Foundation for the Arts, and Fundación DOP. He is represented by Sabrina Amrani Gallery in Madrid.
"My pathway into art came from the necessity to forge a pathway towards representation, to represent not one, but the countless possibilities of identities that were tucked away and rendered invisible," says Timothy Hyunsoo Lee, of his practice.
