LONDON.- Works by leading German photographer Ursula Schulz-Dornburg and American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner will be installed at the Lichfield Studios, the first in a rolling program of contemporary exhibitions to be curated by Tristan Hoare and Wilmotte UK.

Hoare intends to platform artists rarely seen in this country, with three to four exhibitions per year, whilst Wilmotte, the practice of celebrated international architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte located on the first floor of the studios, will alternate with architecture focused exhibitions.

The launch exhibition deals with concepts of time and pattern. For Schulz-Dornburg’s first major UK show, Hoare has selected work from the artist’s seminal "Sonnenstand / Solar Position" series, last seen at the Corcoran in Washington. The works were made at the nine hermitages that line the medieval pilgrimage route from Barcelona to Santiago de Compostela. By photographing these buildings at different times of the day and different seasons of the year, she captures the movement of light that turns the chapels into sundials.

A second series of work, "Wuste / Desert", shows the timeless landscapes of the deserts of old Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq. These minimalist terrains and empty horizons contrast with what was once widely considered to be the cradle of civilisation. The influence of Bernd and Hiller Becher can be seen in images that show the remarkable ‘architecture’ of bus shelters in Armenia; Schulz-Dornburg’s work was exhibited alongside the Bechers’ in “Photography in Dusseldorf: Musee D'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris” earlier this year.

Lawrence Weiner’s typographic work "TURNED AS THE WORLD TURNS" will be mounted on the outside of The Lichfield Studios, complementing the subject of time.
