Famous Donegal artist's paintings up for auction
Robert Taylor Carson HRUA (1919-2008), Horn Head and Sheephaven Bay, County Donegal, 2004. Oil on panel, signed lower left; signed, dated and inscribed with title on reverse 20 by 24in.

DUBLIN.- Not since the studio sale of Derek Hill with Christie’s in 2001 has there been a more hotly anticipated auction from an artist synonymous with the Donegal landscape. An important and desirable collection by Robert Taylor Carson HRUA (1919-2008) comprises the opening selection of Whyte’s Christmas auction and offers collectors an abundance of choice from the private collection and studio of the artist. With paintings in both oil and watercolour, dating from 1947 to 2004 and guiding from as little as €150, this exceptional collection traces a career spent observing landscapes and their inhabitants and, most particularly, Co. Donegal.

Among the stunning views painted by Taylor Carson are those of Horn Head and Sheephaven Bay, the beach at Downings, Muckish Mountain from Breaghy Head, Lackagh Bridge and Clontallagh. With deft command of the paintbrush he captures the ever-changing light as it passes over the wealth of breath-taking landmarks the county has to offer.

The honest and unassuming style for which he is celebrated beautifully captures the people connected to those places and their way of life, some of which is slowly disappearing or already part of a time past. Fishermen, horses and riders, to Travellers, talkers and dancers… all kinds of characters are observed and celebrated in this collection.

Although Donegal features heavily, other parts of the country are also captured. Outside of Ireland, Taylor Carson’s time spent on the Continent, The Canary and Balearic Islands, North America and Canada is also included. Decorative Still Lifes and Nude Studies shed light on another side of the artist’s oeuvre which buyers may not be familiar with. A widely collected and desirable artist this exciting collection - with excellent provenance - includes the best examples to be seen on the secondary market in recent years.

With guides from €150 to €3,000 and nearly 100 works to choose from, this sale ensures that no pocket or taste will be excluded.
