CLEVELAND, OH.- Gray’s begins the year with a wide array of paintings, works on paper, jewelry, sterling silver, and decorative items from estates across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

The auction begins at lot number 1 with American abstract painter, Helen Frankenthaler’s limited edition, playful silkscreen entitled Flirt, 1995. This lot is numbered 71/126 and signed in the lower right hand corner. The auction continues the playful theme with silkscreens and lithographs from Adolph Gottlieb, Victor Passmore and Joan Miro. A collection of Miro’s similarly playful abstracts are featured at lots 5 through 16. This collection is notable for being low edition or Printer’s Proofs. Three works from 1974: Le Soleil Rouge, Moon and Star, were purchased from New York’s Gallery 121, bear Certificates of Authenticity and are at lots 11, 12 and 13 respectively.

Lot 101 is a magnificent oil on canvas, depicting a lush, mountainous North Carolina landscape by the Belgian born artist William Anthony Frerichs. He immigrated to the United States in 1850, settled in New York and soon immersed himself in the Hudson River School style. Frederic Randle’s oil on canvas, at lot 105 is titled Spring Morning. This 19th century oil depicts two fashionable ladies in an Italianate garden who are clearly alarmed as they watch their King Charles spaniel’s bark at the feisty black swan swimming close by.

Next up are posters from Franco-Swiss decorative artist Eugene Grasset. Lot 146’s framed poster titled L’Andalousie au temps des Maures, is comprised of two oversized lithographs depicting a mounted battle scene. This grand poster was made for the Parisian world’s fair, Exposition Universelle of 1900. His fierce depiction of a festively attired Mexican Cowboy and his black steed advertises Chocolat Mexicain from Masson Paris, at lot 147. Sarah Bernhardt as a statuesque Jeanne d’Arc is the subject of lot 148. Lots 147 &148 are printed and published by Nouv. Les Affiches Artistiques. G. de Malherbe & H.A. Cellot.

The decorative arts make up the remainder of the auction. Lot 175 is an elegant 19th century, Capodimonte, eight arm, Blanc de Chine chandelier. This porcelain chandelier measures 20” in diameter and 23” high. Lot 166 allows you to dine in style with the Lunt sterling silver flatware set, in the Eloquence pattern, this service for twelve comes with serving utensils, in its original mahogany silver box.
