Cotemporary Art Museum Presents Project

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA.- The Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) has provided Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle School with an after school program where approximately thirteen sixth-grade students created a series of window-based art installations focusing on the theme of exploring and documenting the Moore Square Historic District. Students reviewed archival imagery of the architecture and history of the area, documented the vicinity with drawings and photography, and interviewed members of the community about the past, present, and future of downtown Raleigh.

This project was led by Raleigh artist and educator Lee Moore. This project is unique in that it gives students an opportunity to become active participants in the community-wide dialogue concerning the future of downtown Raleigh. The students and the artwork they create serve as a bridge between the organizations involved in downtown revitalization and the community through a public exhibition in downtown storefront windows. The student artwork will be displayed in windows at Exploris Store (201 E. Hargett St), Cherry Huffman Architects (135 E Martin St), Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle School (301 S Person St), and the Heilig-Levine Building (137 S Wilmington St).

An unveiling reception is scheduled for Saturday May 8, 1-2:30pm at the Urban Design Center. The Urban Design Center is located on the first floor of the historic Alexander Building, at 133 Fayetteville Street Mall, across from the First Union Capital Center.

CAM would like to extend a special thank you to the following organizations, businesses, and individuals who were involved in this project: Askew Taylor Paints, Dan Becker (Raleigh Historic Districts), Daniel Douglas, Elizabeth Alley, and Michelle Bowan (Raleigh Urban Design Center), Vivian Irving, Greg Hatem (Empire Properties), Wanda Cox Bailey (Richard B. Harrison Library), Leah Levine, Ken Peters (Raleigh City Museum), Southeastern Camera, Devon Welch (Wolf Camera @ Cameron Village), Father & Son Antiques, Exploris, Cherry Huffman Architects, Graham Auman (Auman Works), Marion Aretakis (Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church), Dana Deaton, Rebus Works, Lucas Miller Buchanan, and Aly Khalifa, Angelica Garcia, JP Reuer, and Diane Lindsey Reeves (DesignBox Gallery).
