OAKLAND, CA.- Clars Auction Gallery’s February 25th sale will present numerous high profile works spanning all categories at their Important Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry/Timepieces and Asian Art Auction. The investment level property to be offered is anticipated to draw robust bidding from collectors around the world. Also among the collections of note coming to this sale, will be the second installment of property from the Sterling Vineyard Winery Art Collection.

The Fine Art
The California Art

Monterey Coast, the circa 1940 signed oil on canvas by Guy Rose, (American/French, 1867-1925) is expected to be the star at this sale. This painting was undoubtedly among the important works on display at the Huntington Museum during the time the institution was building the foundation of their important California Landscapes Collection. The exhibition label: Huntington Library and Art Gallery Exhibition, March 1940, is affixed on the verso and this work measures 15”h x 19”w. Monterey Coast will be offered with an estimate of $80,000 - $120,000. This is an extraordinary work exemplifying Rose’s gift as the renowned Impressionist painter he was as well as his passion and interpretation of the beauty of the California land and seascape.

Also to be presented prominently in the California section will be Harbor Scene with Fishermen by Edward Alfred Cucuel (American/French, 1875-1954). This signed oil on canvas will be offered for $20,000 - $40,000 and is a perfect example of his impressionistic style of painting idyllic outdoor scenes.

By Franz Arthur Bischoff (American, 1864-1929), Pink Roses, a signed oil on canvas, is estimated at $15,000 - $20,000 (Provenance: John Moran Auctioneers, Monrovia, California (June 20, 2006, lot 26). Completing the California highlights will be an impressive Yosemite work by Thomas Hill (American, 1829-1908). Titled Yosemite Valley with Cathedral Rock and Half Dome, this oil on canvas carries the estimate of $15,000 - $25,000.

The American Art
Red Haired Acrobat, 1944, by Modernist painter Walt Kuhn (American, 1877-1949), is also expected to headline this sale. This oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, measures 30"h x 24"w, and will be offered for $60,000-$90,000. Renowned for his penetrating yet boldly simple portraits, this work is a must have for collectors of this artist.

Seth Eastman (American, 1808-1875), West Point graduate and fine artist, will be represented with his compelling oil on canvas Figures Along Water in Upstate New York (Possibly Catskills), 1865. This work will be offered with an estimate of $30,000 - $50,000. (Note: this work is accompanied by extensive documentation from Christie's, Sotheby's, museums, and the original owner.)

By artist Robert Wood (American, 1889-1979), Bluebonnet Time in Texas is a wonderful example of his renowned scenes of the Texas Hill Country. This oil on canvas carries an estimate of $20,000 - $40,000.

Rounding out the significant American works to be offered will be New York Winter Scene, an oil on canvas by Colin Campbell Cooper (American, 1856-1937) that will be offered for $15,000-25,000. By Eric Sloane (American, 1905-1985), his oil on board titled October, is expected to fetch $7,000-10,000

The European Art
Topping the works by European artists will be Portrait of Professor Martin Eduard von Simson with his Wife, 1849, by Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (German, 1800-1882). This signed and dated oil on canvas, was dedicated to Professor Martin Eduard von Simson and carries the estimate of $20,000 – 40,000. (Provenance: From the private collection of Rosemary and Norman Eckersley)

Another outstanding painting by Russian artist, Mihail Chemiakin (Russian, b. 1943), Kapuabaute, 1979, will certainly pique the interest of collectors of this world-renown artist. The $20,000-$30,000 estimate for such a rare and large work from the artists’ early years will also help to garner multiple bidders, as seen with a similar work sold by Clars in December.

The gilt bronze sculpture by Jean-Leon Gerome (French, 1824-1904), titled Napoleon Entering Cairo measures 16" h and will be offered for $10,000-15,000 and by artist Barnard Cathelin (French, 1919-2004), his oil on canvas titled Automne dans le Jardins du Kremlin, 1969, is expected to achieve $8,000-12,000.

The Mexican Art
Once again, Clars will present an important work by David Alfaro Siqueiros (Mexican, 1896-1974). Their offering of works by this artist in September 2017 met with exceptional results. On February 25th, his work titled Arbol Florido, a pyroxylin on paper (laid down on masonite), will be presented with an estimate of $30,000 – 50,000. (Provenance: Private Collection Berkeley, California; Private Collection Mexico City, Mexico; Collection of Manuel Saurez, owner/builder of Hotel de Mexico and Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros (where Siqueiros painted the mural "La Marcha de la Humanidad”).

Highlights in Decorative Arts & Furnishings
In the spotlight at this sale will be an impressive Tiffany Studios, New York, Venetian desk lamp, circa 1910. This stunning work in American design will be offered with an estimate $50,000-70,000.

Also to be featured prominently in the Modern furniture portion of this sale will be a Herve van der Straeten “Astrolab” patinated bronze chandelier that is estimated at $15,000-20,000.

Collectors of American studio furniture will be excited about the fine selection furniture by Arthur Espenet Carpenter. Highlights include two walnut Wishbone armchairs, each valued at $7,000-10,000, two nesting low tables estimated at $6,000-9,000, and two cabinets expected to bring $5,000-7,000 each.

A collection of art glass will be offered including a Napoleone Martinuzzi for V.S.M. Venini and Co. “Opalino” vase and a Paolo Venini (1895-1959) Incisi vase, circa 1956.

Fashionistas will be no doubt vie heatedly for a collection of Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags, including two Hermes ostrich Birkin handbags, each valued at $8,000-12,000.

Slot machine and gambling memorabilia collectors will be very interested in a Five cent Caille "Caille Eclipse" upright floor model slot machine circa 1904, estimated at $20,000-25,000.

During the Saturday session, a collection of Pre-Columbian, Oceanic and African Art will be presented. Featured items will include Pre-Columbian Cocle/Veraguas, Panama vessels, and a Maori jade ear pendant, (Provenance: ex.-collection Lewis Land), as well as Mende society masks.

The Sterling Vineyard Winery Art Collection
Clars Auction Gallery is honored to announce that they will be presenting works of fine art, decorative arts & furnishings from the private collection of Sterling Vineyards Winery, a collection which has been on international tour for the past three years. Approximately 700 pieces will be offered over the course of the upcoming year, 90 percent of which was part of this curated exhibition.

Among the fine art highlights to be offered on February 25th will be the bronze sculpture titled Buste du Rieur au Pampre, is by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875). Measuring 22.5” high, this piece will be offered for $5,000 - $7,000.

In decorative arts and furnishings, two 18th century Spanish Varguenos will be offered, as well as a circa 1750 Continental Gothic giltwood carved coffer.

Deric Torres, Vice President of Furniture and Decorative Art at Clars commented, “We are very proud to have been selected to present this important collection at auction. With Clars worldwide reach, this property is sure to attract advanced collectors globally.” Clars had inaugural offering of the first two pieces from this collection on January 21st and market responded immediately. An early 18th century Ottoman tortoise and mother of pearl coffer was offered with an estimate of $1,000-1,500 but soared quickly to the final sale price of $12,100. A Continental iron lockbox, circa 1780, experienced similar demand selling for $8,470, over four times its estimate.

Highlights in Asian Art and Antiques
Highlighting the important Asian offerings will be a selection of Sino-Tibetan bronze Buddhist sculptures. Of particular note is a gilt bronze Amitayus that will be offered with an estimate of $10,000-15,000.

Clars continues to realize exceptionally high prices of on Himalayan thangkas and a fine selection will be offered in February including one depicting Green Tara, Buddha.

Highlights in Jewelry and Timepieces
It’s all about stunning jewelry in diamonds and sapphires this month spanning the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco design periods.

An Art Deco 12 ct, Cat’s Eye chrysoberyl, diamond, platinum and 14k white gold ring carries an estimate of $13,000-18,000. Rivaling for top spot and from the Edwardian era, is a 4.90 ct. Ceylon sapphire (AGL no gemological evidence of heat nor clarity enhancement), diamond and 14k rose gold ring that is estimated at $16,000-20,000. And from the Victorian era, two piecess will be offered. The first is a 3.45 ct, Ceylon sapphire (AGL no gemological evidence of heat nor clarity enhancement), diamond, platinum and 18k yellow gold pendant-brooch and the second is a demantoid garnet, diamond, ruby, platinum-topped 18kyYellow gold pheasant brooch. Both brooches carry the estimate of $5,000 - $7,000.

Rounding out the highlights will be 1.38ct natural fancy vivid yellow diamond, near colorless diamond, platinum and 18k yellow gold ring that is estimated at $8,000-12,000.

Clars’ Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry/Timepieces and Asian Art Auction will be held on Saturday and Sunday February 24th and 25th, 2018. The sales will begin promptly at 9:30am on Saturday and Sunday. Previews for this sale will be held Friday, February 23rd from 1pm to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9:00 am and by appointment the week prior.
