LOS ANGELES, CA.- Parrasch Heijnen Gallery is presenting Anne Truitt / Daniel Turner.

Psychology and material transformation continually inform Daniel Turner’s work. His sculptures are often characterized by a specific response to a site under a controlled set of processes. These elements are present in the artist’s previous works, for example an entire waiting room cast into a series of solid bars, a healthcare facility reduced to a darkened stain against an exhibition wall, and a cafeteria dissolved across the expanse of a floor.

For this exhibition, Turner has created a new series of five sculptures comprised of select contents of a psychiatric facility, which were recast into solid architectonic forms. Composed of aluminum and steel, these works are evocative of maritime markers, the surfaces of which expose subtle incongruities after tidal exposure.

Concurrently on view are two iconic sculptures by Anne Truitt (1921-2004) in direct historic conversation with Turner. Both artists create totemic forms that have been devised through physical labor, from either the deconstruction of material or the application of numerous layers of unblemished paint. Truitt’s and Turner’s sculptures share a similar solitude, each being structurally sound and emotionally vulnerable.

Daniel Turner was born in Portsmouth, VA in 1983, and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions including: the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX (2014); Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp, Belgium (2014); Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève/Fondation Arditi, Geneva, Switzerland (2014); Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck, Austria (2015); Kunstmuseen Krefeld, Museen Haus Lange und Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany (2016), and Kunstmuseum Thun, Thun, Switzerland (2016). Turner’s work is on view in a solo exhibition at Le Confort Moderne in Poitiers, France through July 1, 2018.

Anne Truitt was born in 1921 in Baltimore, MD, and died in 2004 in Washington, DC. Her work is on view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC through July 8, 2018 in a solo exhibition entitled In the Tower: Anne Truitt and at Dia: Beacon, Beacon, NY. Past solo exhibitions include: the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1973–74); the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1974); and the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD (1974 and 1992). In 2009, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, organized a comprehensive survey of Truitt’s work.
