HONG KONG.- This August, Old Master Q, an enduring icon which encapsulates the collective memory of Hong Kong and the Chinese diaspora, returns once again to
Sothebys. Entitled Old Master Q 2.0, the selling exhibition is yet another collaboration between Sothebys and Old Master Q, following the hugely successful 2014 exhibition of Mr. Alphonso Wongs original works. The exhibition will take place at Sothebys Hong Kong Sl2 Gallery throughout 10 25 August 2018, and will be the final public selling exhibition of the late artist.
Old Master Q 2.0 will exhibit original works by the father-and-son duo, including Mr. Alphonso Wongs early colour covers and comic strips in four- and six-frame formats, as well as acrylic paintings by Professor Joseph Wong, whose playful and contemporary interpretation of Old Master Q characters vests a unique life energy into this quintessential cultural icon of Hong Kong. The star lot of the exhibition -- the earliest existing Old Master Q cover artwork, Rockn Roll -- is being offered at an online auction from 1 17 August. This is the first time for Sothebys Hong Kong to combine its online and offline platforms, offering collectors an enhanced purchasing experience.
Jonathan Wong, Gallery Director, states: We now approach the ten-year mark since Old Master Q and Sothebys first collaboration, when we auctioned Mr. Alphonso Wongs original artworks in April 2008. This paved the way for the highly popular selling exhibition staged at Sothebys Gallery six years later, which sold out almost as soon as it had opened and became the talk of the town. This summer, Sothebys is delighted to partner with Old Master Q once again as we host Alphonsos final public selling exhibition. We are fortunate enough to present the earliest existing Old Master Q cover artwork on our online auction platform, allowing participation from collectors and fans around the world. Through Old Master Q 2.0, we hope to express our sincerest tribute to Mr. Alphonso Wong, and to share with the audience the nostalgia of old Hong Kong.
Professor Joseph Wong expresses: While it has now been over a year since my fathers passing, Old Master Q maintains a strong hold over the hearts of its readers. To meet the strong collecting demand of Old Master Q artworks, I am thrilled to be working once again with our long-time partner, Sothebys, in presenting my late fathers final selling exhibition. I will also be offering my prized Old Master Q - Rockn Roll original artwork, which is the cover of the second issue and the earliest original cover artwork extant, since the cover of the first issue is now irrecoverable. It is my honour to also bring to the exhibition my acrylic paintings series -- The Implications, to commemorate the great achievements of my father.
