LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA), the premier auction house on the West Coast for Modern and Contemporary Art & Design, announced this week the list of highlights that will headline their fall auction held on September 30, 2018. Each of the top featured works will be fresh to the market and have been sourced from various local estates and important collections. The auction, LAMA’s largest of the 2018 year, will feature over 380 works with a pre-auction estimate of $3.5-$5.1 million.

Among the rarest is a 1969 construction by Sergio Camargo (est.: $500,000-700,000) which was only recently discovered in a Southern California home where it has been residing since purchased in 1971. Camargo, a Brazilian artist and a member of the European movement GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel), is best known for his monochromatic constructions of cut dowels which form semi-geometric patterns. Untitled (Relief No. 261) is an exceptional and large example of Camargo’s most iconic work. The local owner purchased it on an impulse when traveling through London on vacation in 1971 from the venerable Gimpel Fils Gallery.

Another exceptional work is a two-piece sculpture by Ken Price (est.: $75,000-100,000). Groota is a pair of the artist’s signature clay vessels with intricately layered paint, dating from 1981. The sculpture was purchased at Willard Gallery in 1986 by a well-known Los Angeles contemporary art collector and museum benefactor.

A 1948 painting by John McLaughlin (est.: $80,000-120,000) leads a small grouping of works from the California Hard Edge school. This example was acquired directly from the artist in the year it was painted and has never been on the market before landing in our auction. This example hasn’t been seen in public since the landmark retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1969. Other Hard Edge works include paintings from Karl Benjamin and Fredrick Hammersley.

A group of 13 works by Andy Warhol (ranging from $4,000 to $120,000) rounds out a collection of Pop art works from a local collection that was built over 40 years. The classic screenprint editions Superman, Moonwalk, Flowers, Chanel, and an original work on paper featuring the Beatles will all hit the auction block for the first time. Other works from this collection include rare works by Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, and Yayoi Kusama.

Works from another important private collection will include original sculpture, paintings, prints and works on paper by Sam Gilliam, David Hockney, and Helen Frankenthaler. This collection also has a mini survey of contemporary realist sculpture by Duane Hanson, John De Andrea, and Carole Feuerman.
