NEW YORK, NY.- Through her intimacy with her subjects and sweeping cinematic vision,
Stephanie Pfriender Stylander has created unforgettable images over the last 25 years, all shot on film, for such leading magazines as Harper's Bazaar Uomo, French Glamour, Interview, British GQ, and including portraits of icons such as Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, Nicole Kidman, Heath Ledger, and Kate Moss, who graces the cover of the photographer's first monograph.
The Untamed Eye (MW Editions, September 25, 2018) introduces you to Pfriender Stylander's world of gritty realism, inspired by Italian Neorealism, the French New Wave, and John Cassavetes films. Exquisitely designed by Takaaki Matsumoto, the book brings together over 130 of Pfriender Stylander's evocative and sensual fashion and celebrity photographs from 1990 to 2006 that feature models, musicians, and actors who embody the photographer's unbridled vision.
Pfriender Stylander writes about shooting in the 1990s: "We were all on the road, there was a fantastic restlessness, we were young and in need of expression. The great fashion and creative directors let you roam, they gave you twenty pages to express your vision - it was a complete creative playground where we could be rebellious, and the word compromise was not spoken, not even thought about."
At the age of fourteen while at a famed rock and roll concert, Pfriender Stylander became enamored with the music, but more importantly it was watching the photographers work with their cameras that transfixed her.
In her artist statement she writes: "Curious as a young girl, I started photographing people; I had a need to know who they were. I was also drawn to fashion which introduced me to designers who worked with a signature style and the interpretation of metaphor. My photography is atmospheric, cinematic, emotional, dark in mood, and beauty is fueled by character. These are the ingredients that make up my visual vocabulary."
After earning an Associate of Science from Endicott College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts in New York, Pfriender Stylander went on to assist the legendary photographer Art Kane. Her career in fashion photography began in the early 1990's when she moved to Milan and Paris and quickly earned a reputation for creating evocative images.
Pfriender Stylander's photographs have been included in exhibitions at Festival International de la Photo de Mode, Art Basel Miami, Paris Photo, Photo Shanghai, and are housed in private collections. She has won numerous awards from the Lucie Foundation, American Photography, Communication Arts and Graphis. She is represented by the Staley-Wise Gallery in New York, the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York and Los Angeles and La Galerie de l'Instant in Paris.
Stephanie and her husband live in downtown New York City.
