CINCINNATI, OH.- British conceptual artist Gillian Wearing has been named the third recipient of the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Schiele Prize. This prestigious award honors the legacy of Marjorie Schiele, a Cincinnati artist whose generous bequest of the Hanke-Schiele Fund makes the award possible.

Cameron Kitchin, the Cincinnati Art Museum Louis and Louise Dieterle Nippert Director, said: “Gillian Wearing is an artist who causes us to question what we believe we know about image, portraiture and biography. She is thoroughly contemporary in her experimentation, yet her work is predicated on art historical study. We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring Gillian Wearing to Cincinnati and to award her the esteemed Schiele Prize.”

The Cincinnati Art Museum presents Life: Gillian Wearing, an exclusive exhibition of Wearing’s iconic lens-based art, including four new works making their world premiere, from October 5–December 30, 2018. Life: Gillian Wearing is supported by FotoFocus, The Millard F. Rogers, Jr. Fund for Prints, Drawings, Photographs and Antiquities, and generous individuals.

Wearing, who won the Turner Prize in 1997 and was appointed O.B.E. in 2011 for services to art, is best known for documenting strangers’ thoughts and confessions through film and photography, as well as re-presenting herself as other artists or family members through the use of masks and elaborate staging. The works on view in Life: Gillian Wearing chart new territory in the artist’s engagement with identity, self-revelation and contemporary media culture, exploring tensions between public and private life, the drive to tell our own secrets and know the secrets of others, and the blurry line between documentation and a constructed point of view.
