LONDON.- Jerwood Charitable Foundation announces that Survey, its major new group exhibition, will tour the UK in 2019 following its debut at Jerwood Space, London from 3 October to 16 December 2018.

Presenting new works by 15 early-career artists from across the UK, Jerwood Charitable Foundation’s largest review of contemporary art practice in 12 years of programming will then tour to g39, Cardiff (2 February-3 April); Bluecoat, Liverpool (Spring 2019) and Baltic, Gateshead (5 July – 29 September). The tour will showcase this selection of the most dynamic and promising artists to a national audience and further contribute to their growing reputations.

Marking a departure from Jerwood Charitable Foundation’s 17 year support of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and coinciding with Frieze London 2018, Survey takes a non-institutional approach to selection with 35 mid-career artists - including Ryan Gander, Andy Holden and Rachel Maclean - nominating the most promising new UK artists working today.

Finalised from a long-list of 72 artists, the exhibition was narrowed down to 15 by Jerwood Visual Arts’ Head of Programme Sarah Williams. Survey explores topics including the family, domestic and gendered/ queer roles, climate change, community film-making and a wider exploration of the current socio-political climate in the UK. The resulting works span a breadth of disciplines, including a futuristic newspaper detailing the assassination of Donald Trump, a three-dimensional painting, a podcast, collaboratively made ceramic objects and a film work reflecting the social and psychological experience of the digital age.

Working with artists within the first five years of their practice, Survey affirms Jerwood Charitable Foundation’s position as a leading authority on “ones to watch”, whilst supporting peer-to-peer advancement and the development of emerging artists. The exhibition also responds to growing demands for artistic support networks beyond the recognised educational framework.

Nominating artists include: Simeon Barclay, Joseph Buckley, Ryan Gander, Emma Hart, Andy Holden, Rachel Maclean, David Osbaldeston, Steven Paige, Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Alessandro Raho, John Sealey, Matt Stokes and Bedwyr Williams. Taking into consideration all UK regions, each nominated two artists for the exhibition. The regional focus ensures a range of the most outstanding and dynamic new voices currently spanning the UK. The selected artists hail from all over the UK, from London to Leeds, Brighton to Sheffield and Cardiff to Glasgow.

Exhibiting artists are: Chris Alton, Simeon Barclay, Hazel Brill, Flo Brooks, Emma Cousin, Joe Fletcher Orr, Thomas Goddard, Ashley Holmes, Lindsey Mendick, Nicole Morris, Milly Peck, Anna Raczynski, Will Sheridan Jr, Rae-Yen Song and Frank Wasser.
A publication will accompany the exhibition and will include a critical essay by Kathryn Lloyd about the wider context of the survey exhibition and its role in bringing together multiple ideas and perspectives.
