WASHINGTON, DC.- The Potomack Company, a Washington, DC, area auction gallery noted for the expertise of its specialists, is now offering several works by notable American artists via private sale as well as a special Meiji-period censer.

A rare large-scale impressionist painting by American artist George Hitchcock (1850-1913), “The Return of Persephone,” circa 1906, is among inventory for sale privately by Potomack. Hitchcock was considered one of the finest painters of his day in America and Europe.

Potomack is also offering a work by another important American impressionist, Guy Carleton Wiggins (1883-1962). Famous for his snowy scenes of New York City, Wiggins’ work is typified in “5th Ave. at 55th Street – Looking North.”

In addition to private sales of paintings, Potomack also presents a Japanese blue and white Arita censer from the Meiji period. With a reticulated cover, the delicate ceramic is painted with blue stripes, all atop three plump stylized sparrow feet. The fitted and domed cover features six large shaped openings and is pierced all over for a simulated basketry effect.
