NEW YORK, NY.- Wythe Hotel, Brooklyns original boutique property, today announces the official 2019 line-up for its Artist Residency Program. First conceived in 2015, the interdisciplinary series brings to life the hotels mission to act as an incubator space for local creativity and art.
Wythe Hotels Artist Residency Program is a line-up of free one-night performances in the hotels screening room that provide a platform for the community to gather and celebrate local New York-based artists who are leaders in their fields, covering the full spectrum of creative pursuits from visual through to performing arts.
Risk taking creativity is an important part of Brooklyns story and the Williamsburg waterfront has served as a home for these pursuits for some time, says Peter Lawrence, Wythe Hotels Owner. Our artist residency program is consistent with Wythe Hotels commitment to provide space to foster local artists, support their ability to try on new ideas, put their process on display, and risk failure... all with the hope of finding their voice.
The line-up kicks-off with a dynamic performance by Ukrainian born, Australia raised and NY-based artist Katya Grokhovsky. Taking place on Wednesday, January 9 at 6:30 PM. Bad Acts will explore identity, gender, domesticity and art history through the construction of fictional personas and analysis of patriarchal society. Grokhovskys work typically explores issues of gender, labor, alienation, displacement and the self, using the body as a tool to interweave the personal and the political. She exposes the grotesque in the societal constructs of femininity and masculinity and scrutinizes the idea of the binary in the everyday.
"We are thrilled to offer our Cinema as an alternative exhibition space to artists and look forward to experiencing the various ways they reimagine its use. Housed within a hotel context, this program is unique in its ability to connect artists and audiences, New Yorkers and visitors from abroad," says Kimia Kline, Art Curator Wythe Hotel.
The full line-up for early-2019 is listed below with specific dates and themes to follow in the coming weeks:
