LOS ANGELES, CA.- Following the exceptional results from The Collection of L.D. "Brink" Brinkman in February, Bonhams will continue to offer a dynamic array of 163 works in the California and Western Paintings & Sculpture auction on April 16. Highlights of the sale include several fresh-to-the-market offerings by leading artists of the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey Peninsula and Los Angeles areas including a dock scene of Belvedere, California by Selden Connor Gile, Western works of art, and a selection of twenty contemporary Western paintings and sculpture from The L.D. “Brink” Brinkman Collection.

Leading the sale is Quiet Cove (Belvedere) painted by Society of Six artist, Selden Connor Gile (1877-1947) (estimate: $250,000-350,000). In 1927, Gile moved north to Tiburon and later to adjacent Belvedere Island, both of which were popular locations for his paintings. The houseboats and rickety shacks along the waterline, many on wooden pilings, provided a rich subject for Gile's explorations of surface and color. Quiet Cove (Belvedere) is a dazzling embodiment of his mastery of color and texture.

Additional highlights include My Cat by Henrietta Shore (1880-1963), painted circa 1930-1935 (estimate: $100,000-150,000); Making Port, a marine painting by Armin Hansen (estimate: $80,000-120,000); and Footbridge below Snowcapped Peaks, an early Alpine landscape by Edgar Payne, painted circa 1921-1923, (estimate: $100,000-150,000).

The Western art section includes works by Joseph Henry Sharp, William Robinson Leigh, Maynard Dixon, Edward Borein, Charlie Dye, Wilson Hurley, and Frederic Remington’s The Broncho Buster, a bronze sculpture which hails from the Collection of Nicole and William M. Keck II (estimate: $80,000-100,000).

Bonhams will present an additional selection of twenty works from the L.D. “Brink” Brinkman Collection of Western paintings and sculpture. Highlights include works by George Phippen, Melvin Warren, and Harry Jackson as well as G. Harvey, Olaf Wieghorst and Douglas Van Howd. Brink developed close personal relationships with these artists and supported their careers over several decades.
