LOS ANGELES.- The MOCA Store has partnered with 10 artists to produce an exclusive series of holiday cards for 2004. Seventeen unique and fun designs have been created by: Gary Baseman; becca; The Clayton Brothers; Dame Darcy; Camille Rose Garcia; House Industries; karlssonwilker, inc.; Todd Oldham; Carlos Quiterio; and The Royal Art Lodge.
MOCA Director of Retail Operations Grant Breding selected the artists for the project. “I’m thrilled that this is just the beginning of a continuing series of holiday cards you won’t find anywhere else,” he said. “This group of talented artists all shared a fascination with the holiday season.”
Creator and executive producer of an Emmy award-winning animated ABC/Disney television show, Teacher's Pet, artist Gary Baseman designed a naughty baby on Santa’s lap. Best known for her images of girls posted in outdoor installations, becca’s poised ice skater is dressed in holiday red and white. The selection of local artists includes Camille Rose Garcia, who paints creepy cartoon children living in wasteland fairytales. Her MOCA design depicts a haggard elf delivering coal to children on Santa’s other list. Dame Darcy, recognized for her “Meat Cake” comic book series, has created a bewitching illustration of the classic gingerbread house. Brothers Rob and Christian Clayton devised homey New Year’s greetings from a flower-holding friend and “season’s greetings” from a sweater-clad reindeer. They teach painting and illustration respectively at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.
Several innovative graphic design firms invented new interpretations for the holidays. House Industries, an internationally recognized, independent digital typeface, design, and illustration studio offered two stylish and colorful text greetings. New York–based graphic design studio karlssonwilker, inc., led by Hjalti Karlsson and Jan Wilker, designed a tongue-in-cheek reindeer segmentation diagram. Two Christmas greeting collages with original illustrations and graphics came from Carlos Quiterio, who manages Re-searcher's Studio, a Lisbon-based network of multimedia designers.
Todd Oldham is both a photographer and an award-winning designer with home décor and furniture lines for Target and La-z-boy. He made four unique cards featuring an eclectic mix of lilies, cowboys, babies, ski chalets, roosters, kittens, and palm trees. The Royal Art Lodge, an acclaimed Winnipeg-based artist collective, whose collaborative work will be featured in an upcoming MOCA exhibition (November 14, 2004, through February 14, 2005, MOCA Pacific Design Center), has created two quirky winter scenes featuring a snowman, reindeer, a turtle, and some birds.
Cards are available in boxes of 10 for $12.95 while individual cards are available for $2.50. The MOCA Store features new, modern, classic, simple, deluxe, smart, current, fun, and original gifts and goods.
