A new initiative to support curatorial research programs was also announced during this meeting in Paris. The Curatorial Research Fellowships will support American curators wishing to conduct research in France. The first applications will be reviewed in the spring of 2005.

According to Jean-René Gehan, Chairman of the Artistic Committee, “this meeting exemplified the philosophy of the Fund, which is always looking for new ways to strengthen the relationships between the U.S. and France by supporting and encouraging high-quality contemporary art programming. As the Fund prepares to celebrate its tenth anniversary, it has set goals for the next year to expand its resources and programs and provide more opportunities for American and French artists to present their work on both sides of the Atlantic.”

In 2004 Etant donnés allocated $167,500 in grants to seven French institutions and ten American institutions. Since its creation in 1994, Etant donnés has distributed more than $1.5 million in grants, supporting some 180 projects. Over the years, Etant donnés has become an established force recognized for encouraging the discovery of many emerging artists and being instrumental in the realization of a substantial number of projects.
