John De Pol

TEANECK, N.J.- Artist John De Pol, 91, died. He was famous for his woodcut images. John De Pol was born in 1913 in Greenwich Village in New York City. While working as a statistical clerk and securities runner on Wall Street, he attended night classes in lithography at the Art Students League. From 1943 to 1945 De Pol served in the United States Army Air Force, and while on duty in Northern Ireland he continued his lithography studies at the College of Art in Belfast. During this time, De Pol also sketched the sights and scenes of Ireland, images that would later form the basis for a series of wood engravings and a 1982 catalog, "Ireland Remembered: A GI's Recollections."

After being discharged from the service, De Pol worked as a typographer and graphic designer for Lewis White, The Thistle Press, and Bernard Brussel-Smith. During this time he also engaged in independent work decorating private-press booklets, separate prints, broadsides, and limited edition books. Over the following years De Pol began to devote even more time to his career as artist, printmaker, and wood engraver, working for such organizations as The Stone House Press, Pickering Press, and Pandick Press. In 1952 his work was chosen to appear in a series of publications by The Woodcut Society, and in 1953 De Pol began illustrating the Ben Franklin Keepsake editions. His engravings have also appeared in keepsakes for Pandick Press and Security Columbian Banknote Company. De Pol has had one-man shows at Bucknell University, Syracuse University, and Juniata University and his prints can be found in the permanent collections of many libraries and museums. De Pol now teaches seminars around the country in wood engraving and in 1974 he and his wife Thelma established Endgrain Press.
