Anne Truitt, View (1999).

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Minimalist sculptor Anne Truitt, 83, died, reported The Washington Post. For more than four decades Anne Truitt produced works of art that challenged the conventions of traditional painting and sculpture. Her achievements and her impact on the course of contemporary art are widely recognized. In his book on minimalism, James Meyer acknowledges Truitts seminal contribution to this movement, but also argues that her hand-painted surfaces, instinctive color, and retention of allusion countered that tendencys literalist impulse
.suggest[ing] on the contrary a practice that points beyond its material substance toward an opaque yet constitutive subject matter.
Of her sculpture, Ms. Truitt stated once: What I want is color in three dimensions, color set free to a point where, theoretically, the support should dissolve into pure color.
