Pop-ups and Palettes: The Many Dimensions of Robert Sabuda |

AMHERST, MA.- The Eric Carle Museum Of Picture Book Art presents Pop-ups and Palettes: The Many Dimensions of Robert Sabuda, through April 2, 2005. Robert Sabuda is considered the modern master of pop-up picture books. Whether original creations for The Twelve Days of Christmas or evocations of existing art such as John Tenniel’s drawings for Alice in Wonderland, his work evokes responses such as: “elegantly crafted;” “ingenious;” “breathtakingly beautiful;” and “amazingly engineered.” Visitors to Pop-ups and Palettes: The Many Dimensions of Robert Sabuda will see how the artist solves the technical challenges connected to paper engineering and will learn that Sabuda’s talents are not confined to three-dimensional wizardry. Blizzard’s Robe, a story of winter in the Arctic, is done in Batik, a centuries-old technique. And Paper Dragon, Marguerite W. Davol’s tale of Chinese scroll art, is comprised of elaborately cut paper. Each of these books are represented by preliminary studies as well as finished art.
