LONDON, UK.- The Institute of Contemporary Arts presents Beck's Futures 2005, on view through May 15, 2005. The ICA is delighted to present the sixth annual Beck’s Futures exhibition and awards. This year’s exhibition will feature the work of six of the most exciting artists working in the UK as selected by an international panel of judges.
Highlights of this year’s exhibition include a new performance work by Lali Chetwynd described as ‘a medieval play, only a sexy one’; absorbing and intriguing work on film by Glasgow-based artist and musician Luke Fowler; Ryan Gander’s ‘Incomplete History of Ideas’, which includes a ‘pub-conversation’ style lecture that draws on urban myth and anecdote; Christina Mackie’s evocative sculptural installations – arising from her attempts to ‘describe a sensation’; a seductive film by Daria Martin entitled ‘Closeup Gallery’ which uses a sleight-of-hand artist to explore ideas of illusion; and new works by Donald Urquhart, whose darkly humorous drawings have previously served as club flyers. Rather than proscribed by a need to work in any one media, or bound by any one methodology, the work on this year’s shortlist is diverse and non-linear, fitting well into the interdisciplinary context of the ICA.
The selection for this year’s Beck’s Futures 2005 has been made by the curators Jessica Morgan, Louise Neri and Beatrix Ruf and the artists Wolfgang Tillmans and Cerith Wyn Evans.
Beck’s Futures and is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the ICA and Beck’s Bier, and has established a reputation for identifying and supporting the work of the most promising artists in the UK. The participating artists will share a £40,000 awards-fund, with one artist selected for a further overall award of £20,000, to be announced at an awards ceremony on 26 April 2005.
Beck’s Futures 2005 will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue available from the ICA Bokshop. The exhibition will subsequently travel to the CCA Glasgow, 28 May – 10 July 2005.
