NEW YORK.- The Gerald Peters Gallery will present Julie Speed: April 7 – May 7, 2005. Julie Speed - an exhibition of 40 paintings, constructions and works on paper, including gouaches and collage, all dating from 2001 – 2004. Speed’s paintings blend Renaissance and Neo-Classical techniques with a surrealist sensibility and dark humor. The work raises questions of religion, sexuality, violence and psychology, while resisting an autobiographical narrative. Some works provide a humorous view of revered figures in the history of art such as Cézanne, Goya and Malevich.
Julie Speed is a contemporary artist based in Austin, Texas. Speed’s works are in several museums, as well as in the collections of actor Johnny Depp
and guitarist Jimmie Vaughan.
Singer Shawn Colvin named her Grammy-award winning album A Few Small Repairs (1997) after one of the artist’s works, and used one of Speed’s works to illustrate the album cover. Speed’s work is the subject of a major monograph published in 2004 by The University of Texas with essays by Elizabeth Ferrer and Edmund P. Pillsbury.
