The Best Scale Models to Build at Home

You name it, the chances are that someone somewhere has made a scale model of it! Scale models, or models which are exact miniatures of full-size items, are enormous fun to make and amazing to look at. Scale models may be simple, or complex, single items or entire landscapes, static or beautifully functional.

With so many alternatives, working out which type of scale model is going to be best to create at home can be a challenge. We're here to help! Take a look at four considerations when deciding on the scale model that's going to be right for you.

Available Space
Obviously, a person with an entire room (or even an entire property) at their disposal can take on far more ambitious scale model projects than somebody who has a more limited amount of space. For people with more space, it's possible to create entire model landscapes (such as a model railway, village, township, zoo, or similar). Where only limited space is available, we suggest concentrating on completing one scale model at a time. This can be displayed elsewhere when completed and you then have space to start the next one.

Functional or Decorative
Some scale models are inanimate - built to look like an exact copy of an item, but in miniature, they are designed for display purposes only. Other models may be fully or partially functional. They may include lighting, moving parts, sound, or special effects. A great way to add character and warmth is with LED lighting for your model home builds. Model boats, cars, planes, and trains may be fitted with engines, enabling them to replicate the movement of "real" versions. Both types of models can work well as home projects, although a scale model function that involves movement will need an area for model makers to test their model's engine and controls.

Tools
Models vary in complexity from kits containing a few pieces that "click" together through to DIY models that are made entirely from raw materials. The more complex the model, the more likelihood there is that tools will be needed. Buying tools can add to the cost of your hobby, and also mean that models take longer to create. If new to scale modeling, we suggest starting with a simple kit, then working your way up.

Expertise
Whilst experienced modelers will happily take on complex models at home, in general, a smaller, simpler model is going to be easier and faster to construct at home. If you opt for a larger scale model size or decide that you want some scale model function, you may need additional space to store or operate the model.

If you want to achieve great effects with your home scale modeling projects, LED lighting can be a great way to add ambiance. It's also simple to fit and versatile enough for almost any type of model.

Why not start looking for inspiration now for your next scale model project?
