LONDON, ENGLAND.- 58 new buildings across the UK and EU have been honoured by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). This year sees a larger number than usual of award-winners. Projects range in size from small theatres, schools and house extensions, to big industrial centres and commercial headquarters. All have been given RIBA Awards for their high architectural standards and their contribution to the local environment.
The 58 buildings will form the longlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize, in association with The Architects’ Journal , which Channel 4 will televise for the third year running on 13 October. The shortlist will be announced on 12 September.
The announcement was made at a special dinner this evening during the RIBA Conference in Birmingham. Speaking after the event, RIBA President Paul Hyett said: “The sheer variety of all these winning projects is testament to the rich and diverse talent of British architects today. All 58 buildings, whether they be a £55,000 bandstand or a £70 million international headquarters, show the value of good design and the benefits it brings to the local community and the people who use them.
“Of course, these buildings would not have been possible without imaginative clients and an excellent design team. By rewarding these projects, the RIBA hopes to encourage more clients to take advantage of the talent in this country to create stunning architecture for everyone to enjoy.
“It is fantastic that Channel 4 are going to broadcast the RIBA Stirling Prize once again. I look forward to a lively contest.”
Paul Finch, editorial director of The Architects’ Journal commented: “This year’s award winners are of exemplary quality and a refreshing reminder that there are practices both large and small doing great work across the country. Some thought that the quantity and quality of buildings might suffer as the impact of the Lottery and the Millennium declines. The winners prove otherwise.”
