Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Emu Corroboree Man (detail), 1972.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.-Two works by Clifford Possum, Emu Corroboree Man and Man's Love Story, each fetched $411,750 at Sotheby’s Aboriginal Art auction in Melbourne.

According to Wally Caruana from Sotheby's, Emu Corroboree Man is a particularly important work. He said, "Clifford lived to become one of the most famous Aboriginal artists in the country and this is his very first painting for a movement called Papunya Tula."

Among the buyers were American and French collectors. There were also high prices for artists from Western Australia's Kimberley region.

Tim Klingender, who directed the event said, “There were some amazing results for artefacts, for bark paintings and for all manner and types of Aboriginal art. There was a lot of international bidding both from America and Europe."
