Reel Architecture: Film Series at the Brooks

MEMPHIS, TN.-In celebration of Architecture Month, co-sponsored by the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Memphis) and Memphis Heritage, Inc., the Brooks will present a series of films exploring the work of some of the most talented and intriguing architects of our time. The series is a sanctioned event of the month-long architecture celebration and an opportunity to make connections between art and architecture. Three films will be presented on separate evenings in the Dorothy K. Hohenberg auditorium. Local architects will be on hand to introduce each of the films. Admission is $5 for Brooks and AIA members and $7 for non-members.

Thursday, September 8, 7:00 pm Santiago Calatrava's Travels - The recipient of the 2005 AIA Gold Medal, Santiago Calatrava is known and respected across the globe, most recently due to his cathedral-like design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. His other projects include the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens.

Thursday, September 22, 7:00 pm Berlin's Jewish Museum: A Personal Tour with Daniel Libeskind - Daniel Libeskind is an exciting and unconventional figure in the world of architecture. Berlin's Jewish Museum: A Personal Tour with Daniel Libeskind, features Libeskind, who is questioned by Alan Riding, New York Times journalist, as he takes him through the building. During this walking tour, he reveals to Riding the entire architectural and philosophical concept of the building's design. Libeskind explains his intention to make the building confusing and somewhat threatening, as he felt that this was appropriate to the history of the German Jews.

Thursday, September 29, 7:00 pm Philip Johnson: Diary of an Eccentric Architect Philip Johnson has always been on the forefront of stylistic change, and his property in New Canaan, Connecticut, is a kind of laboratory where Johnson is his own best client. It was there that he built the famous "Glass House" that he still resides in. The house has no walls and an accompanying guesthouse, by contrast, has no windows, though it is light and sensuous inside. We visit these, as well as the gallery that houses Johnson's extensive collection of contemporary art on its revolving walls.
