ST. JOHN'S, NL, CANADA.-The Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador presents A Garden of Forking Paths, on view through September 25, 2005. A Garden of Forking Paths assembles work by six Canadian artists that together explore how knowledge, history and cultural symbols are constructed and used. It takes its name from a story by Argentine writer J. L. Borges. In it, the idea of a single, true history is replaced by a multitude of possible worlds, created by the stories and symbols that each of us choose to embrace and maintain.
The exhibition combines monumental sculpture (Tom Bendtsen, Toronto and Alexander Graham, Halifax) with photogravure (David Morrish, Corner Brook), photography (Angela Grauerholz, Montreal), painting (Alex Livingston, Halifax) , video installation and holography (Lori Clarke, St. John's).
Curator Bruce Johnson cites the context of The Rooms as inspiration for the show: "Visitors to the museum and archives will confront the collective memory and history of this province. Entering the art gallery, audiences are invited to consider the nature of knowledge and tradition itself."
Tom Bendtsen's functional tower rises from the gallery floor, built from 12,000 books. Columns of stacked, steel dories by artist Alexander Graham crest against a field of 85 paintings by Alex Livingston, based on a 17th century guide to the natural world. Photo-based works by David Morrish and Angela Grauerholz meet video and holography installations by Lori Clarke that explore technology's relationship with the body. The exhibition continues until September 25, 2005. Supported by The Canada Council for the Arts.
