PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND.-Ship's biscuits, 5000 plastic cups, gravel, compost and water are just some of the materials used in the first art installation in Portsmouth to celebrate the bi-centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Artist Chris Biddlecombe has taken the theme of Nelson as an everyday man to create innovative and must see artworks. From tomorrow until 4 September you can see the exhibition, 'Taking tea with Mr Thompson' for free at St Thomas' Cathedral in Old Portsmouth.
Mr Thompson is the pseudonym Admiral Lord Nelson used to disguise paternity to his illegitimate daughter whilst writing to his mistress, Emma.
An array of 5000 cups scattered on the Cathedral floor depicts the image of Horatia, Nelson's daughter. Filled with earth and water the cups represent the number of British, Spanish and French men who were killed during the Battle of Trafalgar.
Approximately 1700 specially baked ships biscuits laid to represent Nelson's eyes, an oversized earthenware and oak tea pot and embroidered pillowcases are other curious objects that make this unique installation a must see. The exhibition is part of Portsmouth City Council's SeaBritain 2005 programme.
