Ernesto "Che" Guevara lying dead (detail), 1967. Photo by Freddy Alborta.

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA.-Bolivian photographer Freddy Alborta, 73, died in La Paz. He is famous for his image of revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara lying dead. In 1967, he was one of the journalists that was allowed to view and photograph the body of Guevara after he was captured and executed by the Bolivian army. Alborta worked as a photojournalist until earlier this year when illness forced him to retire.
The image portrays the corpse surrounded by soldiers and with his eyes open. It was first published in a Bolivian newspaper and then sent through the newswire all over the world as proof that the leftist hero was dead. The photograph shows Guevara half-naked lying on a hospital cot in the town of Vallegrande. The head is propped up and an officer points to his bare chest.
