Work from the Juan March Foundation (detail).

MADRID, SPAIN.-This year the Fundación Juan March celebrates fifty years of existence and thirty years of organising exhibitions in its gallery space in Madrid. To mark this event it is presenting a survey of the most significant avant-garde movements and styles in 20th-century art, featuring 60 works by 57 artists.
The Fundación was a pioneer in promoting knowledge in Spain of many of the most important artists of the 20th century. Its intention in the present exhibition is to look back at some of the 150 or so group shows and solo exhibitions that have been held in its Madrid headquarters since 1975. Covering the years from 1860 to 1996, the present exhibition brings together a selection of works and artists previously included in earlier exhibitions and representing the leading trends in modern and contemporary art.
The 60 works on show 51 paintings, 6 photographs and 3 sculptures come from 29 museums, galleries and private collections in Europe and the United States. Each artist is represented by a single work, with the exception of the photographers Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri-Cartier Bresson and Irving Penn, who each have two works.
