Morisot Biographer to Speak at Brooks

MEMPHIS, TN.- Renowned scholar Dr. Anne Higonnet will discuss Impressionism from a feminine point of view in her lecture on Sunday, November 13 at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. The lecture is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition Berthe Morisot: An Impressionist and Her Circle and will take place at 2 p.m. in the Dorothy K. Hohenberg auditorium.

Dr. Higonnet’s talk will explore the many portraits and self-portraits of Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, revealing the strategies that these artists used to reconcile their personal and professional lives. The lecture is free with museum admission.

Higonnet is a senior professor of nineteenth-century French art at Barnard College. She is the author of Berthe Morisot's Images of Women as well as a comprehensive biography on Morisot. Her most recent book, Pictures of Innocence: The History and Crisis of Ideal Childhood, explores how our changing conception of childhood is culturally and historically determined.

Berthe Morisot: An Impressionist and Her Circle features more than 75 paintings and drawings by Morisot and her Impressionist colleagues, including Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, and Pierre Auguste Renoir. The exhibition is on view at the Brooks through January 29, 2006. Presenting sponsor: Southeastern Asset Management Inc., Advisor to Longleaf Partners Funds. Sponsors: The Adams Foundation, FedEx Corporation, Clear Channel Outdoor, Regions Morgan Keegan, Brooks Museum League, and New Tech Graphics.
