AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.-The Morris Museum of Art presents An American Story: The Wyeth Family Tradition of Art, on view through January 15, 2006. Over the past two decades, the public has shown a growing fascination with the paintings of the Wyeth family. The public turned out in record numbers to see Andrew Wyeth's famous Helga pictures when they first were shown in 1986, and one portrait of the artist's companion even claimed the cover of Time magazine that summer. A year later the first scholarly appraisal of the Wyeth family finally appeared in print. An American Vision: Three Generations of Wyeth Art (1987), explained the history of N. C. (Newell Convers) Wyeth's lively book illustrations, son Andrew's distinctive landscapes and figures in watercolor, and grandson Jamie's portraits and animal paintings in water media. The current exhibition, An American Story: The Wyeth Family Tradition of Art, enlarges the public's view of this famous clan, supplementing the trio's paintings with work by four other talented members of the family circle.
