ROCKLAND, MAINE.-The Farnsworth Art Museum presents Stewart Henderson: Rethinking the Enigma, on view through February 22, 2006. Stewart Henderson is one of the most promising of the emerging, younger generation of contemporary artists in Maine. One of his primary concerns as an artist is to produce an accessible image without being strictly literal. His work encourages individual connections and associations and strives to deflate the myth that abstract art is hard to understand. It incorporates a painted surface with applied images of familiar objects that can be readily identified by the viewer. His sinuous constructs link together random bits of natural and man-made patterns to create a swirling metaphor of the way we see. The pieces loop into themselves and contain hundreds of fragments for the eye to re-visit with each passage across the canvas. Henderson says "we each form a different understanding or meaning. It is this principal that buttresses the notion that non-figurative art exists solely for each individual."
