BENNINGTON.- The Bennington Museum presents the exhibit The Etchings of Rembrandt in its Parmalee Gallery through July 16. Rembrandt is widely recognized as one of the greatest artists of all time, but it is less well-known that some of his most innovative work was as a print maker, in the medium of etching. The Bennington Museum will be hosting an exhibition of some of these original etchings, providing local art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see the Dutch masters work with out traveling hours to Boston or New York. The works are from the private collection of Baltimore cardiologist Dr. Morton Mower and his wife, Tobia. Dr. Mowers collection reveals the breadth of Rembrandt van Rijn''s 17th-century subjects, from portraits and landscapes to historical and biblical narratives. This exhibit is sponsored by AppleJack Art Partners and the Town of Bennigton.
The Bennington Museum was founded as the Bennington Historical Association in 1875 to celebrate Bennington's Colonial past and, more specifically, to commemorate the historic Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington in 1777. Over the years our mission has expanded to preserve and interpret the rich history of southern Vermont and neighboring regions.
Over time the museum acquired paintings and sculpture by Vermont artists, children's toys, maps, books, and military artifacts. We are proud of our extensive array of American glass from the 19th to the early 20th century, vintage portraits of early settlers by Ammi Phillips; our unique Ralph Earl townscape; examples of abolitionist newspapers by William Lloyd Garrison; a Windsor writing-arm chair owned by Ira Allen, a founder of Vermont and author of the State's constitution; and the world's largest collection of Bennington pottery.
