ASPEN.- The Aspen Art Museum opens an exhibit featuring recycled works of art made by Pedro Reyes. In his sculptures and large scale outdoor projects, Mexican artist Pedro Reyes employs the visual language of architecture and design to confront the problems of the modernist ideologies of purity and utopia. Often interactive, Reyess works are a rare combination of the socially engaged and the romantic. For a recent project at PR04, a biennial exhibition in Puerto Rico, Reyes constructed a floating pyramid out of Styrofoam and wood that was used by people who swam out from the beach as a meeting spot, a reflective space, and, on more than one occasion, an overnight shelter.
For his exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum - his first one-person museum exhibition in the United States - Reyes will create Recyclone, a new project addressing consumption, waste, and recycling in our daily lives. Recyclone, a set of stackable, variably sized and colored recycling bins, provides a customizable and aesthetically pleasing waste reduction solution.
Described by the artist as "a vibrant and alluring functional sculpture that can be adapted to fit a wide array of private and public needs, from the kitchen to the community center, the home office to city hall," Recyclone will be installed on the museums grounds.
The show is organized by the Aspen Art Museum. Funded in part by the AAM National Council. Publications underwritten by the AAM Publications Fund.
